Plant a Newtown Pippin Tree

Earth Day NY, working with MillionTreesNYC, is helping to get Newtown Pippins planted in NYC public schools! Our city schools, all grades, are now the top priority for sapling distribution. We have a couple dozen pairs of Newtown Pippins and gourmet pollinators left.

All The Newtown Pippin, "the nation's founding apple" favored by Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, and George Washington, is the only American heirloom apple native to New York City, having first been picked in 1730 on the Newtown farm of Gershon Moore, in what is now the Borough of Queens.

THE HARVEST TIME PROGRAM

Welcome to the Slow Food NYC Harvest Time Network Blog.

Harvest Time, our local Slow Food in Schools program, creates a meaningful relationship between young people and their food and the environment by providing hands-on experiences, community engagement, and the enjoyment of good, healthful food. Through programs including New Victory Gardens, Good Food Education, and Youth Farm Stands, Harvest Time teaches young people the value of a good, clean, and fair food community.

Members of the SFNYC Harvest Time Network are invited to engage actively in the good food movement.. sharing ideas and resources and working with schools and communities to advance the "slow" cause of a good, clean, and fair food chain.

VICTORY GARDENS
Like the Victory Gardens of the 1940’s, the Victory Garden today is a call to arms. Just as it was half a century ago, our arsenal is made up of dirt and seeds, trowels and hoes. Only this time around our motivations are different. When private citizens grew edible gardens during wartime, they were helping to relieve the burden of agriculture to feed our forces and our allies. By planting edible gardens in the 21st century, we’re pushing back at global agribusiness, taking charge of our piece of the food chain, and seizing the opportunity to re-build the relationship between us and our food.

GOOD FOOD EDUCATION
Good food is real food, culturally rooted food, the food our grandparents knew. It is food that is seasonal, that travels fewer miles to our plates, and that is as nature intended it to be. And good food is healthful food. In Harvest Time Good Food Education classes, through talks, hands-on food preparation, tasting, and communal dining, we teach children about eating healthfully, responsibly, and enjoyably.

YOUTH FARM STANDS
Young people making good, locally grown food available to their families and their communities strengthens our local food chain. When young people sell local farm and Victory Garden produce at their schools, they are engaged, learn more about food, contribute to the health and well-being of their communities, and help build a good, clean, and fair food chain.

SLOW FOOD NYC CAN HELP

Slow Food NYC is an all volunteer local chapter of Slow Food USA. If you are looking for ideas, "how to" advice, assistance, or just moral support, contact us. Funds derived from Events we produce can be used to help support Harvest Time projects sponsored by Slow Food members. We are targeting recurring and non-recurring financial support to schools in food crisis neighborhoods; the South Bronx, Central and East Harlem, and Central Brooklyn..communities suffering the consequences of poor and non-existent food chain infrastructure, high rates of diabetes and obesity If you are a Slow Food member who is starting a school, or community, "slow" good food program and could use financial assistance, we will be happy to talk. In either case, contact us.
